Finding an effective deodorant may be one of the toughest parts of going green. It’s kind of amazing how important not being stinky is until you find yourself being stinky!
So when I heard great things about Schmidt’s Deodorant, I was excited to try. Having an entire line of different scents (including fragrance free) is a nice feature, most natural deodorants just have a few or only one scent option. And, since I am writing a review, you can probably guess that I like – no, LOVE – Schmidt’s Deodorant! AND, I’m giving one away and the giveaway is open to all countries – yay!
First, the effectiveness. Deodorants needs to do one thing – deodorize. Schmidt’s does this extremely well. I apply in the morning and I am stink free the entire day. Not half of the day, or most of the day, but ALL day. It hasn’t gotten super hot here yet, but we have had days in the 80’s already and it kept me from being smelly on the warmer days too.
One thing I will mention, and this is the case with all natural deodorants, is they are not antiperspirants. Antiperspirants block your sweat glands so you can’t sweat. Natural deodorants do not do that. I have used some cream deodorants in the past that I feel do help a little with sweating, I think some of the powder included in the formula absorbs some sweat. This doesn’t really do that though. I have found myself sweating with this, but I am ok with that – as long as I don’t stink (and I don’t!).
This is also really gentle on my skin. I have experienced zero irritation from this. Newly shaved skin even handles this with ease. My boyfriend had tried Soapwalla way back when and got a rash from it, so I had him try the Cedarwood+Juniper one and he had no irritation and said it also kept him stink-free! While I can’t promise this same results with everyone of course, he was my litmus test for sensitivity and it passed.
So as I mentioned above, they have a few different scents. Here they are, with their official description:
Bergamot+Lime: “Fresh, spicy citrus fragrance. Disinfectant and skin healing.” I would say this is less bergamot and more lime. It is a really nice, fresh-squeezed lime scent.
Cedarwood+Juniper: “Warm, woody, soft pine scent. Antiseptic and detoxifying.” The first time I smelled this, I thought of a pine tree, but more juniper-y than pine-y. It’s a little too masculine for my personal taste, but does have a really nice smell to it. I actually would love this as a candle for the winter!
Fragrance Free: “Naturally free of fragrance and essential oils. Ideal for sensitive skin.” Enough said.
Lavender+Sage: “Clean, herbaceous scent. Antioxidant and antiseptic.” My favorite of the bunch. It has a lovely fresh lavender smell with just a whiff of sage to balance it out. While the ingredients list shows there is more sage than lavender, lavender is by far the stronger scent of the two.
Ylang Ylang+Calendula: “Sweet, delicate floral aroma. Antibacterial and skin soothing.” This smells a bit sweeter than I thought it would, but not artificially sweet like candy or anything. It is a very delicate scent, like the description says. It’s the lightest scent of the bunch (after fragrance free of course!).
I do want to mention the application because it is a bit tricky at first. Each deodorant comes with a little gray spatula (shown above in my picture), that you can use to scrape some out. I say scrape because the formula is a little hard. Now, it is a little colder right now so perhaps in the summer this will be a softer consistency. After I scrape some out, I place it on my fingers and warm it up between my hands (not the whole hand of course, just the fingers). I find I almost have to squish it before I can spread it, if that makes sense? Otherwise I’m just rolling a little deodorant ball between my fingers and that doesn’t do me any good. But once I’ve squished it, I spread it evenly across my fingers and then press (not rub) into each armpit. And voila! Stink free all day.
Now for the ingredients! The ingredients are all a bit different because the scent comes from natural essential oils. They all have the same base though, which is the Fragrance Free:
Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder, Theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Humulus lupulus (hop) extract.
The essential oils for each blend are after the cocoa seed butter and/or the vitamin E, it’s a bit different for each. Although each formula is a little different (because of the essential oils), I have found them all to have the same effectiveness.
Overall, I can’t recommend Schmidt’s Deodorant enough. It has worked SO well, and has been super gentle on my (and my boyfriend’s) skin.
