I love the idea of a company that sticks with a few things and does those things extremely well. ILIA is one of them – just a few things and they all are awesome. I’m happy to report a new brand to add to the list – Red Apple Lipstick. While the name has Lipstick in the title, they actually offer two products: lipstick (as you may have guessed) and eye shadows.
Today, I’ll be talking about and have a video tutorial of their eye shadows. (I have tried one of their lipsticks and love it too, a full review of lipsticks will be coming soon)
AND, they are 100% gluten free. While gluten free doesn’t really matter to most of us, some people with celiacs are so sensitive to gluten that they can’t even have it in their makeup. Especially with lipstick, since you may consume some, gluten free can be an important factor when deciding what makeup to wear. Gluten free or not though, I really love these eye shadows.
I have tried four eye shadows:
- Lucky Penny
- Twinkle Taupe
- Chocolate Martini
I have a nude/brown eyeshadow obsession, and of course these are all shades of brown :o)
They also provided a handy dandy Z-Palette which has a magnetic back (and it’s a pretty strong magnet!) that holds 9 eyeshadows. Of course, having 4 eye shadows in a 9 shadow palette makes me want 5 more….
So here are pictures of the shadows in the Z-Palette. Gotta love the little apple design:
These colors are a bit washed out though so here are swatches so you get a better idea:
The official color descriptions for these are:
Champagne: gorgeous frosted taupe
Lucky Penny: crush on copper
Twinkle Taupe: stunning plum-based bronze
Chocolate Martini: rich, chocolate brown with copper and rose gold reflects
And, I have to say – all of these are 100% accurate.
So while I usually think of Champagnes as being a light yellow, this Champagne is a silver taupe (or frosted taupe as they say). It’s almost a mushroom-y color. It does have a nice shimmer to it, which you can see in the picture above in sunlight.
Lucky Penny is a really pretty copper-y gold. Some golds and coppers can be orange-y, and this isn’t at all. I feel like the pictures I took don’t quite do it justice, you will see it better in the video below.
Twinkly Taupe is my favorite. It is a beautiful brown with a slight purple (or plum) tint. I love it.
Chocolate Martini is fun, but a little too dark for me as an eyeshadow. I love it as an eyeliner though and it does have a few sparkles for an extra something-something. Not too many though where it looks garish.
One thing I will say about these eye shadows- they are PIGMENTED. The first few swipes I applied, I actually applied them too dark because they are so pigmented. A little bit is all you need. And, they last all day! I will make the disclaimer that I do wear an eye shadow primer, but even some natural eye shadows unfortunately haven’t lasted all day. These do – and they still look as great at night as they did in the morning.
Now for the ingredients!
Mica, Zinc Oxide, Silica, Ascorbyl Palmitate. May contain iron oxides, titanium dioxide, chromium, ultra marines.
Nice and simple, just like I like them to be!
So while I can chat all I want about them, here’s a video which shows them off much better!
Overall – I am highly impressed with Red Apple Lipstick Eyeshadows (and their crazy strong Z-Palette). The colors are super pigmented and last all day. Plus, their simple formula is a definite plus and they are gluten free! Update: AND, I just saw that they are having a sale for Valentine’s Day – 15% off all eyeshadows (discounted price shows up in your cart). Sale ends Sunday, 2/9.
