The winter can pose a problem for skincare: my skin needs moisture, but too much moisture will break it out. It can be an endless cycle of adding moisture which cause breakouts so I use breakout treatments which dry my skin out so I add moisture which then breaks it out….you get the picture.
I saw a fellow eco-beauty blogger tweet about how Marie Veronique Organics (also known as MVO) helped her breakouts and my interest immediately perked. I contacted them and they were kind enough to send me a sample of their Treatment Oil but it was a bit too strong for my sensitive skin. They then recommended their Face Oil has a great way to moisturize while also helping breakouts. Well I’ll be honest in that I was skeptical something that could provide moisture could also helping breakouts, but they were right! MVO Face Oil really does help.
The smell of MVO Face Oil is unique. It’s very herbaceous and even slightly grassy at first, but then softens to a floral fragrance. While the smell is a little unique, it has become addictive and I really love applying it to my skin.
The oil is yellow-toned and slightly thin. While I would consider it moisturizing, it is lighter overall compared to other facial oils. I have been using this in the morning since it is so light. It goes well under my primer and doesn’t make my face look greasy at all – a definite bonus!
Speaking of breakouts, since I have been using this, I have had less breakouts and any breakouts I do get heal fast. I even have less blackheads (and I have very very stubborn blackheads). The lack of blackheads alone are worth celebrating for me! And when I have strayed and not used this oil, my skin will start getting a little pimple or two and then I’m back to the Face Oil to keep my skin clear.
The only drawback is that for this time of year, this doesn’t provide quite enough moisture to use as my only moisturizer, especially on my cheeks. I know once it heats up (which here in Arizona will be probably in a month or two), this will be my go-to oil day or night. For now, I’ve been using this in the morning and alternating at night with a more moisturizing oil on drier areas of my face (MVO recommended their Pacific Oil but I have not tried it). Because this helps keep my skin clear, I want to use it as much as possible and then just throw in a bit more moisture when I need it.
Another thing I am impressed about is they actually have clinical results! While some companies boast “clinical results”, rarely do you actually see anything about the clinical results on their website. Well, not MVO! Here are their results:
After only 7 days:
Decreases visible wrinkles and fine lines by 8.1%*
After 45 days:
Reduces fine lines and wrinkles by 22.7%*
Decreases facial pore size by 9.8%*
Increases facial hydration by 40.7%*
Increases facial smoothness by 17.7%*
* All of the above are highly statistically significant (p < 0.05)
If you are not sure what statistically significant means, it is a statistical way of saying that the results are actually from the ‘treatment’ (in this case, the Face Oil) and not by chance. You want a p value less than 0.05 and they even say the p-value is less than 0.05. Just the fact they included the p-value impressed me.
Now for the ingredients!
Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil*, vitus viniferi (grapeseed) oil*, prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil*, limnanthes alba (meadowfoam) seed oil, argania spinosa (argan) oil*, rubus fruticosus (blackberry) seed oil*, borago officinalis (borage) oil*, emu oil, oenotherus biennis (evening primrose) oil*, sclerocarya birrea (marula) oil*, rosa rubignosa (rosehip) seed oil*, tocopherol (vitamin e), rubus idaeus (black raspberry) seed oil, vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry) seed oil*, actinidia deliciosa (kiwi) seed oil*, hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) oil*, calophyllum inophyllum (tamanu) oil*, lecithin*, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) oleoresin*, lycopene, euphasia superba (krill) oil, daucus carota (carrot) seed essential oil, lavendula angustfolia (lavender) essential oil*, rosa centifolia (rose) essential oil, rosa damascena (rose) essential oil, pelargonium graveolens (rose geranium) essential oil, helichrysum italicum (helichrysum) essential oil, citrus aurantium bigaradia (neroli) essential oil, cananga odorata (ylang ylang) essential oil*
As you can see, it has quite the array of good-for-skin oils such as jojoba, grapeseed, apricot, meadowfoam, argan, borage, evening primrose and rosehip. Without talking about all of these individually, just know these all have different beneficial properties for skin so having the blend is great! And the best part? It is 83% organic! Sweeeeet.
To note, this does have krill oil in it. Which, as you might imagine, comes from krill. I don’t really mind (obviously, I did use it!) but I did want to point it out for the vegetarians/vegans who may be reading.
Overall, I really love MVO Face Oil. It has given me moisture during these colder months while also helping any breakouts, and even helped my blackheads. I’m very impressed and now want to try everything else from the line!
Update: Marie Veronique Organics is now just Marie Veronique
