I love discovering new products! It’s like Christmas every time. As years go by, it seems like every new product I try is better and better. Companies are really stepping it up with providing advanced formulas, without all the nasty chemicals.
So anyhoooo, I have discovered 3 new body moisturizers, all unique in their own way but all great!
The first one is by a new company called Balanced Guru. Their line is actually pretty diverse for being a new company. 95% of their ingredients are certified organic, which is pretty awesome. You do see this in their price, but I imagine having a product that is so high in organic ingredients doesn’t come cheap.
I also really like their names for products – “Hug Me Now” and “Soothe Me Slowly”? Sign me up! Who doesn’t love hugs? ;o)
Soothe Me is their body oil. I’ve become a big fan of body oils ever since I tried Patyka’s. The texture of Soothe Me Slowly actually reminds me of Patyka, it’s a thicker oil that is pretty emollient and moisturizing. It sinks in pretty well too, but I wouldn’t say 100%. This doesn’t leaves skin greasy, but I can tell where I’ve applied it vs. not.
The smell is also truly lovely. It’s a citrus-y lavender at first but then calms to an herbal lavender. It’s refreshing but calming – if that’s possible? I’ve really enjoyed applying this at night before bed, especially after an active day (more on that below). The scent is calming to help me sleep, and the body oil is so moisturizing it heals my skin while I sleep!
The bottle is a dark plastic, which will help keep light out so the oils last longer. The bottle comes sealed with a pump in the box – such a nice extra! It is 8 fl oz, so will last quite awhile since you only need a small amount of oil.
Ingredients: HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL*, OLEA EUROPAEA (OLIVE) OIL*, SESAMUM INDICUM (SESAME) SEED OIL*, PERSEA AMERICANA (AVOCADO) OIL*, CITRUS SINENSIS (SWEET ORANGE) FRUIT PEEL OIL*, ARGANIA SPINOSA (ARGAN) OIL*, CYMBOPOGON MARTINII (PALMAROSA) GRASS OIL*, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS (JOJOBA) SEED OIL* , ADANSONIA DIGITATA (BAOBAB) OIL*, FLAVOR, ARNICA MONTANA (ARNICA) FLOWER EXTRACT*, URTICA DIOICA (NETTLE) EXTRACT*, MIXED TOCOPHEROLS (VITAMIN E), LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA (LAVENDER) FLOWER OIL* , CITRUS AURANTIUM (PETITGRAIN) OIL*, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) EXTRACT* , PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS (GERANIUM) OIL*.
* CERTIFIED ORGANIC INGREDIENTS.
(sorry for the all caps – that’s how they have it on their website and I don’t feel like re-typing. I promise I’m not yelling the ingredients at you…or am I? ORGANIC SUNFLOWER OIL!!!!)
Looking at the top four ingredients, I can see why this is so moisturizing but still sinks in well. Sunflower seed oil is an emollient but light oil. Olive oil is of course very emollient and very moisturizing, but also greasy. Sesame seed oil is a very dry oil, so provides a nice balance to the olive oil. Avocado oil is like sunflower, emollient but light. So overall, you have light oils being balanced with the incredible moisture of olive and the dryness of sesame. A great blend!
And these aren’t the only oils used, they also include argan, jojoba (actually a wax), and baobab – quite the mix of excellent oils!
The fragrance comes from lavender, petitgrain (bitter orange), rosemary and geranium. The initial smell really comes from the lavender and petitgrain, but I do smell the rosemary and geranium after 15 minutes or so.
So this does contain “flavor.” I’ve never seen that before in a skin care product. This would not be good for eating, so perhaps it is their way of saying fragrance? I’m not sure to be honest!
A note about arnica. It is actually toxic if ingested but is great applied topically for sprains, bruises and swelling. If you look at natural ointments for athletes, it will always contain arnica. Soothe Me Slowly does contain arnica, and given that this is such an emollient and moisturizing oil, this would be a great massage oil after a long workout. And it’s why I enjoy applying it at bedtime after a long day.
Overall, I’m so glad I was introduced to the Balanced Guru line. Soothe Me uses not just organic oils, but a great blend of quality organic oils. It’s soothing, refreshing and calming all in one – and the arnica soothes sore muscles and joints.
Next on the list is Living Nature’s Vitality Body Oil…
