I admit it – I have used eye sponges to apply eye shadow since I began using eye shadow in middle school (**runs and hides in shame**). I shouldn’t be admitting this – after all, I have a beauty blog! So here’s the thing, eye sponges are what I knew, so I kept with what I knew. But then I woke up and realized, wow – there’s so much I can do with the right brush! So I began experimenting with brushes, and here I am today…
I’ve been meaning to write reviews on brushes for quite some time actually! And now I’m finally getting around to it.
Bdellium Tools makes some pretty awesome brushes. Their green line uses sustainable bamboo for the handles and vegan/synthetic bristles. They also do not treat the green line with an antibacterial coating (which I prefer!).
I have quite a few of their brushes, including the Smoky Eyes 5 piece collection of course (what caused me to fall in love with them). Terri, the owner of Integrity Botanicals, recommended this set and I’m so glad she did! It’s really great and very versatile.
The set includes the following brushes:
760 – Liner/Brow
716 – Smokey Eyeliner
769 – Angled Contour
777 – Shadow
781 – Crease
760 is a smaller angle liner. By smaller I mean not as wide as some others I own. It’s a good angle liner though that really helps create a very fine line.
716 is an interesting brush. I had never used a brush specifically for a ‘smokey line.’ The brush head comes to a point, but is still thicker. It’s sort of like a small, pointy crease brush. It’s a little stiff, but not a lot like other eyeliner brushes I’ve used. It does work very well for creating a smokey line since it’s a bit thicker.
769 is an interesting another interesting brush. The angled contour is great for those with large eyes, and is actually great for contouring nose lines too! It’s best described in the video below, so I’ll leave it to Jen to explain!
777 is your typical eye shadow brush. It’s about medium width and length, and works great for all over color. I find myself reaching for this for the every-day eye makeup look – no smoky eyes needed!
781 is along the lines of 777, your typical crease brush. It has a pointed end – but not as pointy as the smokey eyeliner. It’s a little larger than some of my other crease brushes. I have small eyes so sometimes the larger brushes get a little more than my creases – but those with medium to large eyes will find this a good fit. I really like this for getting my under-brow area – since it is more pointed I get shadow where I want it and not where I don’t. The signs of a good crease brush :o)
The thing I appreciate about all of these is how SOFT they are. I find myself just playing with them and running my finger over it. Of course I then curse myself because I’m getting my skin oils all over it! Oh well, it’s worth it – they are that soft.
And while these are for the ‘smokey eye.’ I find this set is super versatile. The only one that’s truly for a smoky look is 769 – the smoky eyeliner. The crease brush, eye shadow brush, and eyeliner brush can be used daily (and I often do!) for any type of look.
Also, the price is super reasonable. I usually don’t talk about prices for products because it can vary by store and sale, etc. But at the current moment this 5-piece set is $27 on Integrity Botanicals. Exsqueeze me? Baking powder? That’s $5.40 a brush! I was shocked after using these, they are so high quality I would have paid 3 times that price per brush.
If you are thinking of trying some eco-friendly eye brushes, I highly recommend this set!
Disclosure: Brushes were provided to me by Integrity Botanicals to try. Opinions and the choice to review are 100% my own! I’m not compensated for anything I write.
