Smellin’ Good with GeoDeo Natural Deodorant

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, finding a good, effective natural deodorant is hard. I did discover Soapwalla, but the problem with soapwalla is it comes in a tub and I have to scoop it out with my fingers, apply, then wash my hands. Ok, when I type that it doesn’t seem like that’s a big deal but in the morning when I’m rushed – it feels like a big deal! So when GeoDeo contacted me to try their new deodorant, I was pretty excited but did not allow myself to get too hopeful. I’ve tried some pretty awful bar deodorants in the past. Really awful. Thankfully – this is NOT awful and not only is it not awful, it’s actually effective!

I received all 3 varieties of GeoDeo: Unscented, Ocean and Island. Unscented is truly unscented, I can’t smell a thing. Ocean is a masculine smell, I’m not sure if it smells like ‘ocean’ so much as typical guy deodorant. I don’t mind unisex smells, but this is a bit too masculine for me. I will say though it does smell good overall and I gave it to my boyfriend to use. Island smells like a fruity drink that I would have by the pool. It’s a little sweet, but fades very quickly after you apply, which I appreciate so it doesn’t clash with perfume etc.

All 3 GeoDeo deodorants are clear, and this is a HUGE bonus – it doesn’t leave white residue. Let me say it again – it doesn’t leave white residue!! Yay! While clay-based deodorants are effective, they can leave a white residue that gets annoying sometimes. I have loved not having to worry about any white powder getting on my clothes when I put them on, or throughout the day. I also have not experienced any yellowing of my clothes either. I can’t even say that about most traditional, chemically deodorants. The fact that this is clear and not yellowing is really really awesome.

The packaging is pretty standard for a bar deodorant. It has a dial on the bottom so you can raise or lower it. One odd thing is that the clear plastic ‘top’ that is usually on every new deodorant is instead built into the cap. So if you raise the deodorant too much, the cap doesn’t fit on all the way, you have to lower the deodorant first. This hasn’t been too big of a deal, but is something I wanted to mention.

So of course, the biggest question is – how well does it work? Pretty darn well I will say. This is not an antiperspirant so it will not stop you from sweating, only aluminum in traditional antiperspirants will do that. All natural deodorants can do is keep you from stinking. And this keeps me from stinking for most of the day. If I haven’t really been active or outside a lot, this will last all day (6 a.m – 10 p.m.). If I have been more active and/or outside, then I would say this lasts about 8 hours. I have found on work days where I have lots of meetings and have been running around all day, by around 3 I feel like I need a little refresher. Since this is a breeze to apply and really affordable, I don’t mind re-applying mid-day!

As for Island vs. Unscented, I do think Island works a teensy bit better. It’s hard because every day is a bit different in how much I move, how much I’m outside etc. so it’s not totally standard from day-to-day. But, after wearing Unscented for a few weeks and then Island for a few weeks, I do think Island may work a bit better.

Now for the ingredients! I think what may be my favorite part is not only does this have natural ingredients, some of them are even organic!

Propanediol (Certified Organic), Water, Glycerin, Sodium Stearate, Saccharomyces Ferment, Zeolite, PEG 100 Stearate, Sucrose Cocoate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Bambusa Vulgaris (Bamboo) Extract (Certified Organic), Aloe Barbadensis Extract (Certified Organic), Laminaria Digitata (Icelandic Algae) Extract (Certified Organic), Fragrance.

When I first saw fragrance my first thought was phthalates, but I’m happy to report this is phthalate free! It is also free of petrochemicals and dyes – which is a huge bonus.

GeoDeo markets a “Detox complex” which they say helps fight impurities, neutralize odors, nourish skin and fight free radicals. While usually stuff like that is just a marketing ploy, they do have science to back up these claims. Saccharomyces Ferment is an enyzme that can help fight odor and zeolite is a mineral that has absorbent properties. The aloe and bamboo extract are known for being anti-irritants and vitamin E is an anti-oxidant so can fight free radicals.

Overall, I’m impressed with the ingredients and am so happy to have found an eco-friendly bar deodorant! AND, stay tuned because in a few days I have a surprise for you all!

Disclosure: Samples were provided to me by GeoDeo to try. Opinions and the choice to review are 100% my own! I’m not compensated for anything I write.

    Hi Cori,
I looked up some of the ingredients on GeoDeo and found Zeolite is a form of alum which makes it a aluminum product. Did you know any of this? And bamboo can have pesticides in them. Do you think next time you review a product you can research the ingredients? I think this is the same company that produces the crystal stone which is definitely in the aluminum world.

    • Hi Mike! I do actually spend time researching ingredients with every product to make sure it’s safe. Regarding Zeolite, aluminum is part of its structure but I was not able to find anything that says its unsafe. In fact, some people take it orally to help decrease heavy metals in their system (but I didn’t share that in my review because I didn’t think it was relevant). Also, with regards to pesticides on bamboo, if a plant is not grown organically, it’s most likely going to have pesticides. I try to use organic products whenever possible, but it is not a make-or-break point for me (but I understand others may only want to use organic). I hope this helps clarify things. I’ve also asked NeoGeo for their input and will share when I hear.

  2. Nice article Cori!

I’ve never tried GeoDeo myself. I’m curious if you’ve ever come across Lavilin? It’s an all-natural deodorant that I am obsessed with!

  3. I just wanted to add to the comments that I suffer from chronic cysts – after much research I came across this product and decided to try it. I found out that anti-persperants clog the pours and traps bacterial which is why I think I’ve been getting a lot of cysts in recent days. Some even had to be removed in the ER because they got so bad. Anyhow since I’ve been using this products my lumpy underarms have gone down dramatically and I am almost cyst free – had an X-ray to confirm. The doctor is amazed how well this product has worked for me. My son has also made the switch after seeing my results. If anyone suffers from the same condition give it a try and see if it works for you. I also like it because it lasts all day, its un scented which is great for scent free environments.

    • Sorry for the late reply – that is so great that this worked so well for you! It’s amazing how the body can recover once chemicals are removed!

  4. Christina Hudler says:

Absolutely love Geodeo. It’s the only natural deodorant I’ve used that seems to work the majority of the day and doesn’t clog my pores. My underarms are very sensitive and every other natural deodorant I’ve used gives me (sorry, TMI) tons of infalmed hair follicles and pimple-like bumps under my arms. This doesn’t!

  5. Courtney says:

I like this product a lot. It does work well…if I’m super inactive! In the summer, after a walk to the corner store, I can already detect a bit of B.O. But, if course, we all have different body chemistry. But there is one thing I wanted to emphasise: I tried putting regular Secret brand deodorant on top of Geodeo and it formed gooey, clumsy grey bits. Not fun when I was late for a hot date.
Don’t make that mistake; just reapply Geodeo more often.

    • That’s a bummer it didn’t work for you. You are right in that everyone is different. Earlier this year I reviewed a few natural deodorants that worked really well for me, you might want to check out those reviews!
