What is it about skin that knows JUST when I start to get happy with it – BOOM, it breaks out. It happens every time, I swear. I have found by keeping my routine simple and diet ‘clean’, I can keep my breakouts to a minimum. Of course, they don’t stay away completely though (much to my frustration).
Thankfully, over the years I have found a few, key products for my arsenal against acne:
These four products help keep acne away (for the most part), but also help them heal really fast when I do break out. So I’ll be spending the next 3 reviews going over these products!
Starting with……. The ARCONA Raspberry Clarifying Pads!
My introduction to this item is 100% due to NuboNau. The fabulous ladies (and perhaps some gentleman too) always include a TON of samples with every order. With one such order, there was a little bity Ziploc-type bag with one single pad inside. I almost threw it away, but thought – what the hey, let’s try it! Needless to say, after one time of using this, I was hooked. I’m now on my third container of these.
The package comes with 45 pads and they are pre-moistened. There isn’t a lot of extra liquid in each container so I HIGHLY recommend keeping that lid shut super tight. I have accidentally dried mine out before by not being super diligent with the lid. Thankfully the customer service at ARCONA is awesome, but just in case – keep that lid tight.
One pad is a few inches around, so you really don’t need the whole thing for your face. Since they are a bit pricey, I recommend cutting them in half. I have heard of people cutting them into fourths but I sometimes felt like I had to use two when I did that, so I keep it to just cutting them in half. Just be sure to make sure your scissors are clean when you cut them. A quick swipe of alcohol on the blades will help prevent any bacteria from making their way onto the pads, and then your face.
The pads have a slight abrasive feel to them. Nothing crazy, but I do feel like I get a small exfoliation when I use them – which I happen to personally like. I feel like it helps the liquid get into my skin better. It’s probably all in my head, but whatever works ;o)
The smell is actually really nice. Not super strong or astringent-y. Just a nice, fresh smell.
So now for the best part – they work! Seriously. These things are awesome. I have raved about them to my mom for some time so she finally bought some and now loves them too.
I have not had a lot of luck with salicylic acid in the past actually. Some products even broke me out worse! Not this though. I swear it helps heal up small pimples overnight, and makes large ones smaller. It also helps clear up blackheads on my nose and makes my skin smoother. It also does my dishes and laundry – ok, maybe not those two but I feel like it does everything else! These really are amazing little pads. My skin just looks better overnight. Which is why after one use of this, I was hooked.
When I first started using them, I used them every night. I have since cut down to a once to a few times a week, unless I am breaking out (usually around that time of the month) and then I use them nightly again, focusing on the problem areas. How often you use them is really up to your skin type.
Now for the ingredients!
Active Ingredients: Salicylic Acid (1%)
Inactive Ingredients: Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel Water), Alcohol Denatured (Ethanol), Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) (Raspberry Fruit Extract), Totara Extract, Eclipta Prostrata Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Leaf Extract, Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Oil, Melaleuca Altemifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil
So when I first looked at the ingredients, I wasn’t too thrilled to see alcohol so high up on the list. But I haven’t experienced any dryness or irritation with these so I can’t complain. It does have 1% salicylic, and like I mentioned previously, I have not had a whole lot of luck with it in the past but the percentage is low and works for me.
I also love the fact there is tea tree oil in these. Tea tree oil is a well known for its anti-microbial properties. It has science and research and all that good stuff. It’s great for acne and is probably what helps this clear up my skin so well.
I had not heard of Totara Extact before but looked it up and it’s also known for its anti-microbial properties, double bonus!
Witch Hazel is also known for being great for acne without being super drying – triple bonus!
I’ve noticed neem oil popping up in products here and there, and it’s always touted for its anti-inflammatory properties. This contains the extract, not the oil, which I imagine would have much of the same good-for-skin properties.
And then of course, where the name of the product comes from – the Raspberry extract. Raspberry extract is purported to have natural anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties.
So they include a lot of different types of antimicrobials along with some great anti-irritant ingredients. Which makes total sense because I swear my skin just looks and feels better after using this stuff. I can’t recommend ARCONA’s Raspberry Clarifying Pads enough!
