As we continue through mascara week, the next mascara up for review is Roxanna Cosmetics Lash Plume Mascara. Roxanna Cosmetics is a line by Roxanna, the owner of Verde Maison, an eco-beauty store in Arizona. I have shopped at this store a few times, and was excited to hear the owner was launching her own line. She was kind enough to provide her mascara for me to try – and I have to say, it’s pretty awesome!
The Lash Plume Mascara brush is really interesting. It’s large, flexible and has short plastic bristles.
When I first saw this, it reminded me of a Cover Girl mascara I tried a loooooong time ago, before my fabulous eco-beauty days. I didn’t like that brush, but this one really works for me. The brush is flexible and can bend, so it really works around your lashes. It’s quite unique, and works very well.
There are four criteria I base mascaras on:
1 – How does it lengthen
2 – How does it thicken
3 – How easy is it to remove if I get on my lid (and I always do)
4 – How much does it rub off on my skin throughout the day
1 – This is so-so for lengthening. A single, normal swipe did not seem to hit the end of my lashes. However, a sweep that focuses on the ends really defined them and made them look nice and look.
2 – This is where the money is for this mascara. It is GREAT for thickening. I was very impressed the first time I used it, it really made my lashes look nice and thick with one coat. The official description for this mascara says its for lengthening, but I think thickening is where it really shines!
3 – I’ve stated previously in other mascara reviews, but I’ll say it again – I’m a messy mascara applier. I always seem to get it on my lid and under my eye when I apply mascara to my lower lashes. Having fair skin, some mascaras can stain my skin, making it hard to remove my mistakes. This does stain a little, but not too bad. This isn’t nearly as bad as some other natural mascaras I’ve tried, so it’s not a deal breaker.
4 – This fares well throughout the day. I do always wear Jane Iredale’s PureLash primer, which helps mascara last longer. With that, I usually have a little wearing by the end of the day, but it’s not too bad. Nothing a quick swipe of a damp napkin or tissue won’t take care of. No raccoon eyes so works for me!
For being a thickening mascara, I have to say I like that it still has a glossy finish and (relatively) thinner formula. Some mascaras that thicken well get really clumpy and dry quickly. I’ve had this for a month or so and no clumping, no dryness – still has fresh as the day I got it! I’m really impressed.
Now for the ingredients! Deionized Water (Aqua), iron oxides (CI 77489, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Stearic acid, beeswax (CeraAlba), copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax, hydroxyethylcellulose, glyceryl stearate, panthenol, wild marjoram extract, thyme extract, cinnamon bark extract.
I have to say, I really love the simple formula. Everything you need in a mascara, nothing you don’t. The hydroxyethylcellulose is what provides the thickening. Panthenol is great for lashes and helps condition them.
The ingredients list on the tube I have says cinnamon bark extract at the end, but the website does not have it. I’m not sure what is more up-to-date, so I’m including the cinnamon bark since it is on the actual product. I’m guessing the wild marjoram (which is just oregano), thyme and cinnamon are the preservatives in this. I’m not so sure about how those effective those are, I haven’t really heard much about them. I researched them a little bit and I did find they have some antimicrobial activity. I’m not sure how strong of a preservative system it is though, so I probably wouldn’t recommend holding onto this for more than 6 months or so – just to be safe. This is my personal preference, and I do the same with lip glosses and other tube-like products.
Overall, this is a great mascara! I love how well it thickens and it has great lasting power. I love the simple formula, and I bet those with sensitive eyes will too. I can’t wait to try other products from this line!
