There are a couple of companies that just can’t seem to do wrong. Patyka is one of those. It seems every product I try, I love! This repair serum continues on the proud tradition of awesomeness.
I’m actually not usually one for facial serums. I don’t care for the feel of dry oils on my skin, and many facial serums are either made with dry oils or are so super rich that my face is a greasy mess. I used to feel this way with body oils as well, and of course Patyka totally converted me on those with the Precious Woods Body Oil. So it should not have surprised me that their facial serum would do the same! It’s a perfect blend of moisture while not being greasy.
I usually leave the ingredients for later in the post, but because this serum is all about what’s in it – I’m going to break a rule (don’t tell anyone).
Ingredients: rosa canina (rose hip) fruit oil*, sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil*, parfum (100% natural mandarin, bergamot, geranium, lemon, clary sage, lime, mentha, arvensis, spearmint, lavender, santal, jatamansi, cistus, neroli)*, limonene**, triticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil*, linalool**, citronellol**, geraniol**, citral**. *organic
This is 99.55% natural and 71.4% organic! Not too shabby!
The two main oils used are rose hip fruit oil and sesame seed oil. Sesame seed oil is a drier oil, but it is balanced with the rose hip. Rose hip isn’t as emollient as say, olive oil, but it has a richer feel to it than sesame. They make a great blend.
Rose hip oil is known for helping photoaging, scars and sun damage. While I don’t have any scars on my face, and don’t have much sun damage (except for these dang freckles I always get), I will say I can tell my skin has improved with this. My main concern is redness. I’ve been using this for about two months (I started shortly after I finished the Odacite skin care set) and my skin has never looked better! It is more even toned, less red, and stays that way throughout the day.
One concern about rose hip oil is that it may not be the best for acne. While I do break out occasionally, I haven’t had any breakouts from this. I do know though that many people who suffer from acne have not had luck with rose hip oil because it can make acne worse. But then others swear by it! I think it’s something that those with acne are just going to have to try and see for themselves.
Also, this product does have wheat germ oil. While I do eat gluten free, I do because of a gluten intolerance (my stomach doesn’t digest gluten well) vs. a true gluten allergy (celiac). Wheat germ oil theoretically shouldn’t have gluten, because wheat germ oil is a fat and gluten is a protein. When wheat germ oil is refined, any gluten or proteins should be taken out. However, I do know some celiacs that swear they can’t even use wheat germ oil topically. Just wanted to point that out for any of my celiac followers!
The rest of the ingredients are natural preservatives, to prevent oxidation of the oils.
So this helps my face and makes it look wonderful, ok. Has lovely organic oils, ok. You know the real reason why I LOVE this product? It’s a girly one. It’s because I love to apply it! First, the smell. It’s heavenly. If you look above, you see it has quite the blend of essential oils. Usually my skin does not like a bunch of EOs, but my skin has had no problems with this. The main scent I smell (and I fully admit I am no perfume or scent connoisseur) is geranium and citrus. Bergamot is the second EO listed, and when I think of bergamot I think of Earl Gray tea. Earl Gray has never struck me as citrus-y, but supposedly bergamot is a citrusy-fresh type scent. So going with that, within the first 4 essential oils, 3 are citrus and the other is geranium. So I guess my nose is pretty good with this being a citrusy geranium ;o) Because of all of those essential oils though, I would not recommend this during the day. Well, obviously, you are wearing sunscreen during the day right?? But essential oils can increase sun sensitivity and because of the blend, I would keep this for a night serum (I guess it’s in the title too!).
A short story. I had tried a facial serum awhile ago that I just didn’t care for (like I said, I haven’t had luck with serums in the past!). So like I do, I gave it to my mom to use (she has amassed quite the organic skin care collection from me!). Well, she loved it. I was asking her about it one day and she said it was like a spa every night. I had no idea what she was talking about, putting on moisturizer is like a spa? Ok Mom! Well, after using this – I 100% understand. I feel just like that every night using this. It smells so nice, and feels so nice, I have really started to enjoy applying it and take the time to massage my face and blend it in. I’m not talking about an hour long massage here, but even taking 2 minutes to slow down, taking in nice big inhalations to smell all the lovely goodness, and slowly massaging in the oil is a wonderful way to end the night. I feel relaxed, and very luxurious. I highly recommend trying that next time you put on your moisturizer!
I normally don’t discuss packaging in reviews because it’s never a make or break deal with me, but because I mentioned the packaging in my other Patyka reviews, I wanted to discuss it here too to be fair. Overall, it’s ok. I think the lovely bottle design of the Precious Woods Body Oil and Neroli Body Lotion have really spoiled me. This serum bottle is a simple, opaque, white plastic bottle. The lid is plastic, as well as the inside pump. I like the fact it is completely opaque because it helps oils last longer. Light (and air) can oxidize serums or moisturizers, so having opaque, air tight packaging is the way to go! I’ve never understood skin care products in jars. Not only am I supposed to swoop my dirty fingers in there (ALL fingers are dirty, not just mine – yours are too) to get it out, but then every time I open it, air and light will degrade whatever antioxidants and other goodies are in the jar! Anyhoo, you won’t have that problem with this! But I think having the plastic makes it feel a little cheaper than the other Patyka products. I guess I just long for a luxurious bottle to match this luxurious serum! But as I said before, it’s no make or break for me.
Overall, this is one awesome serum. It has organic oils, smells WONDERFUL and applies like a dream. It has helped my skin look and feel better. Patyka, you never cease to amaze me!
