Hold the phone. Call Batman. I have an announcement to make! I have found some seriously sweet lip glosses. And not sweet as in flavor, I mean sweet as in awesome. These are awesome.
Lip glosses can be tough. Sometimes they are too thin, or too sticky, or too gloopy, or taste weird, or are a weird color or are drying, and the list goes on. The Marie Natie lip glosses are none of those. They are moisturizing and feel thick but not in a gloopy or sticky way. Many natural lip glosses are thin in texture. I’m not sure why, it’s just what I’ve found through my years of eco-beauty buying. These feel thicker than the rest, and are very rich in texture and very moisturizing. But we’ll get to the ingredients later.
I have tried two colors, American Beauty and Sexy Red. The website does not have color descriptions, just swatches, which to be honest are only so-so for accuracy. I would describe them as:
American Beauty: Magenta pink with blue and purple shimmer
Sexy Red: Warm red with gold shimmer
Now for pictures!
Left is outside, right is inside. American Beauty on top and Sexy Red on bottom
When I first saw American Beauty I thought – wow! In your face! But it actually applies sheer (thank goodness for me! That would be bright!) and gives a nice pinky red tone to your lips. I applied it pretty thick on my arm to show the color, but it naturally applies sheer. I prefer sheer lip glosses because I can swipe and go, without worrying about how it looks or if I applied it perfectly.
Inside, you can’t really see the shimmer but outside in the sunlight it really has a nice sparkle. The sparkle is bluish-purple and with the natural color of the lip gloss, makes the entire lip gloss color cool in nature. I’m not usually one for wearing lip products with a lot of sparkle during the day, but this is pretty subdued and only shows in full sunlight.
Another great thing about American Beauty is that even when it does wear away, your lips are left with color! So while it is sheer, it does deposit some pink color, which is really nice. It’s definitely a darker magenta/red pink, not a baby doll pink.
For some reason Sexy Red is showing up very orange in my pictures, and when I try to correct it, it throws the other colors off. So just take my word that Sexy Red is not this orange. It is a warm red though. I found this to be a little more sheer even than American Beauty, or it could just be it was closer to my natural lip color so didn’t show as much. When I applied it, it just gave a nice almost-clear gloss to my lips. Because it was so sheer/matched my lips, I didn’t really notice it deposit color when it wore off. I really like Sexy Red for a natural, every day lip gloss. I guess Sexy is just my every day look ;o)
The taste of these are interesting in that it is different depending on the color! Sexy red reminded me of marshmallows, not sure why, but definitely marshmallows. Not vanilla, not cake, not cupcakes, it’s marshmallows ok? American Beauty didn’t really taste or smell like anything. Who knows why they were different! Either way, neither tasted bad.
As I said above, the texture is a bit thicker than other lip glosses I have (including Vapour and Au Naturale) but thankfully are not sticky. These are also very moisturizing. It reminds me a lot of those Clinique tinted superbalms from way back when. I don’t even know if they make them anymore (I checked out of curiosity, they don’t), but I used to love them back in high school. Well, these are like that. Very moisturizing, to the point you would think it’s a liquid lip balm or a lip treatment. But they are green! And have color! Double bonus!
Now for the ingredients!
Jojoba oil, jojoba gel, pomegranate oil, sunflower seed oil, grapefruit seed oil, candelilla wax, carnuba wax, vitamin e, vitamin e acetate, mica, and essential oil.
Looking at these ingredients, it’s no wonder these are so hydrating! I have never seen jojoba gel before, which could be what gives it a thicker texture. I’m a huge fan of jojoba, it’s actually a wax and very similar to the makeup of our own skin oil. Pomegranate is very hydrating, and sunflower seed oil is as well but tends to be lighter in nature – which probably helps it not be so sticky. Grapefruit seed oil is used as a preservative, as well as vitamin e (which also helps with hydration!). I’m not sure what essential oils are in there, it could be a blend for preservative purposes. I didn’t notice any distinctive smell or taste. The mica is what gives it the sparkle.
Overall, an amazing lip gloss! Sheer, moisturizing, and best of all – great ingredients!
Now, for my surprise – I am giving away two of these! That’s right, Well Beauty Blog is having its first contest. A HUGE thank you to Marie Natie for donating two lip glosses. The contest starts tomorrow so be sure to check back for ways to enter!
