You know when you have a small purse and you only have room for one lipstick? Well, Ilia lipstick (or more specifically, their tinted lip conditioner) is what I choose to put in there. Ilia’s Bang Bang may, no this IS, my favorite lipstick ever. Which is quite the statement because I’ve used a LOT of lipsticks. I love this lipstick. A lot. So now that you know where I stand….
I can’t quite remember where I first heard about Ilia’s lipsticks, but after reading about it, I quickly picked up Bang Bang because it was red, and well, I have a special place in my heart for red lipsticks. I had heard they were great, and when a company launches with only lipstick, you have to think they know their lipstick. In this case, it’s true.
I was amazed when I tried it, because this is the best red lipstick I’ve tried. I’ll start with the color. It’s a sheer, soft red. It brings a nice red tone to the lips without being super in your face about it. Some red lipsticks are so opaque it looks very obvious I’m wearing red lipstick, and you have to be very careful with application. This on the other hand, is very sheer so just makes my lips look naturally red and gorgeous.
Another nice thing about the color is the finish. It’s somewhat shiny, but not like a lip gloss – I almost want to call it a satin finish. There is no shimmer at all. Some lipsticks have shimmer, which can be fun at night, but sometimes I really don’t want shimmer on my lips. After all, no lips are naturally shimmery/glittery, so it doesn’t look natural. I really love the finish because its sheer and natural, so it really does look like my lips are just naturally awesome.
The formula is very moisturizing, like a lip balm. I feel there are two types of lip balms, waxy and oily. I feel like this lipstick is more oily, which makes it thinner and moisturizing. This is so moisturizing, I would use this as my lip balm. But that would get expensive :o(
My favorite part? It’s beautiful, sure, feels great, whatev, but the ingredients! It’s 85% organic!
Ingredients: (from Ilia’s website): Organic Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Organic Jojoba (Simmondsia Chinensis) Seed Oil, Organic Beeswax (Cera Alba), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Organic Sesamum Indicum (Seasame) Seed Oil, Organic Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Tocopheryl Acetate (Natural Vitamin E), Pomegranate (Punica Granatum) Seed Extract, Grape (Vitis Vinifera) Seed Extract, Citrus Aurantium Ducil (Orange) Fruit Oil, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Oil, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Oil. May Contain: Mica, Titanium Dixoide, Iron Oxide (CI 77499, CI 77492, CI 77491), Red 7 CI15850, Red 28 CI45410, Yellow 5 CI19140.
I was a bit worried with having Castor Seed Oil as the first ingredient because I’ve tried other lipsticks that have this as their first lipstick and are waxy and drying – but this isn’t! I think due to the other moisturizing oils such as jojoba, pomegranate and grape seed extract, it keeps the lipstick smooth.
So after I fell in love with Bang Bang, I wanted to try the other colors. I took advantage of Spirit Beauty Lounge’s awesome custom sample program and picked up Nobody’s Baby, Blossom Lady and Shell Shock.
These lipsticks have the same formula as Bang Bang, and are just as smooth and moisturizing. So I’ll just describe the colors. First, I will show a swatch of all the lipsticks both indoors and outdoors.
Nobody’s Baby is a sheer nudish-pinky apricot. Spirit Beauty Lounge describes it as “The perfect, sheer nude.” I agree! I have always stayed away from nudes because they look so brown on me and really blah me out (yes, I used blah as a verb and it works). Nobody’s Baby has a slight color tinge, so it closely matches my natural lip color, but with a little oomph.
Blossom Lady is a sheer medium pink. It’s described as ” A muted pink that anyone can wear.” I would say this is pretty accurate. It is a lovely pink that is not too bright and not too opaque. I tried to determine whether this is a cool or a warm pink, and it seems to depend on the lighting. Overall, it’s pretty neutral – which is why I think its so verstatile.
Shell Shock is a bright pinky coral. It’s described as a “A vintage warm pink.” I can’t say anything to “vintage” because I’m not too familiar with the colors of vintage lipsticks, but the warm pink kinda works. I’d describe it more as a coral color, and the warmness of it depends on the lighting. It’s a fun color.
I hope Ilia launches more soon! These lipsticks are so great, I’d love to see what they come up with next.
Update: They have launched more! Read my review of the Spring 2012 lipstick line.
